Why We Love Winter in Teton Valley

Published November 12, 2025

Winter in Teton Valley is long, there’s no denying it, but that’s exactly why we love it. When the snow settles deep across the valley floor and the peaks sparkle under bluebird skies, our community doesn’t hibernate. We bundle up, wax the skis, and embrace the season with the kind of energy and joy that mountain towns are known for.

From November through March, Teton Valley transforms into a playground for all ages and abilities. Powder days at Grand Targhee Resort call to skiers and snowboarders, while cross-country trails at Teton Canyon, Alta, and Grand Targhee invite gliders and snowshoers to explore the quiet forests. But the fun doesn’t stop on the slopes. The winter calendar is full of local traditions that bring the community together in memorable ways.

One of the valley’s most anticipated events is Teton Valley Skijoring’s Grand Showdown , held February 21–22, 2026, in Victor. This high-speed, adrenaline-filled weekend features horse and skier teams racing side by side through snow-packed courses. The event draws thousands of spectators each year, blending Western grit and mountain-town thrill in a celebration that’s as family-friendly as it is exciting.

In Driggs, winter creativity takes center stage during Downtown Driggs Association’s Snowscapes, happening January 19–24, 2026. This annual snow sculpture competition turns the city plaza into an outdoor art gallery. Local artists, families, and visiting sculptors carve massive snow blocks into incredible works of art. Visitors can watch the process unfold, vote for their favorites, and enjoy the festive atmosphere with lights, music, and hot cocoa.

Further north, the small town of Tetonia hosts its own winter spectacle with the Snowplane Rally, typically held in late January. Snowplanes, unique aircraft-like machines built to glide over snow, line up for races, exhibitions, and family fun in a nostalgic nod to Idaho’s snow-loving roots. It’s a community event where you’ll see grandparents swapping stories as kids race around in snow boots.

What ties all of this together is the sense of camaraderie that defines life here. Winter in Teton Valley isn’t just about enduring the cold; it’s about celebrating it. Locals and visitors gather around bonfires, share a drink after a day on the mountain, and welcome newcomers like old friends.

Yes, winter is long, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s the season that brings out the best in our valley, where adventure, artistry, and community warmth make the cold months something truly special.
