Creating a Powerful Leadership Partnership Between the ED and the Board

October 10 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

$30

presented by: Andrea Somerville of Somerville Consulting Firm

Fred, the ED: “We have the worst board. They don’t do anything.”
Me: “What have you asked them to do?”
Fred: “Well nothing. They just never step up. They’re the Board! I shouldn’t have to ask.”
Monica, Board Member: “Our ED, Fred, seems to have it all under control.”
Me: “What makes you say that?”
Monica: “Fred’s never asked us to do anything.”
Me: “Have you ever offered to do anything?”
Board Member: “Well no. I figured Fred would ask us if he needed us. I certainly don’t want to impose.”

The relationship between the Board the ED is often a tricky one. Some EDs feel over-scrutinized, others feel entirely ignored. Some EDs can’t quite figure out how to utilize the Board, and others simply defer to the Board.

On the other hand, some board members micro-manage and others rubber-stamp ED decisions. Some board members are asked to do so much, they feel like employees, others feel that it’s enough their name is listed as a board member.

During this workshop, we’ll explore how to create a powerful leadership partnership between the Board and ED. This workshop goes beyond the basic understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the ED and the Board. Together, we will discuss:

  • The value of a high-functioning Board and what’s possible to achieve through healthy partnership;
  • The necessary components of a powerful leadership relationship between the board and ED and how to create this environment;
  • Reasonable expectations of the ED and the Board and how to strike the right balance; and
  • How Boards progress and mature over time and how the ED can evolve in sync with the Board.

Space is limited. Please RSVP by Tuesday, October 8th to Brian at bthysell@cftetonvalley.org.
